This is Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium purpureum).
The definition of a weed is a wild plant that is growing unwanted
and is in competition with cultivated plants.

But in fact this weed has many qualities.
This weed is an edible herb that attracts butterflies and birds.
This weed is a hardy native perennial, a vigorous spreader and
it blooms late summer to early fall when other plants have packed it in for the year.
Measuring up to 3 feet tall, the ornamental mauve pink flowers won me over.

You decide-what's in a name?
